Undergraduate dissertation timeline: a realistic 12-week plan

A dissertation is long enough to feel abstract and short enough to punish abstraction. “Do research for a while, then write it” sounds calm in week one and becomes an emergency genre by week ten.

This undergraduate dissertation timeline gives twelve weeks a concrete shape. Each phase ends with something you can show a supervisor or place in a draft. Adapt the details to your department, ethics process and method; keep the order and the buffer wherever you can.

Before week 1: copy the immovable rules

Put the official submission date, word limit, required sections, formatting rules and ethics requirements in one project record. Add supervisor availability and any departmental milestones. Your personal plan must sit inside those fixed dates, not beside them.

Schedule your private submission target at least one working day before the official deadline. Put both dates on your student calendar. The earlier target creates room for file problems, slow uploads and the traditional final discovery that one table has escaped the margins.

Weeks 1–2: turn a topic into a workable question

A topic is “social media and political participation”. A question defines a relationship, population, period and kind of answer. Narrow until you can explain what evidence would answer it and obtain that evidence inside your time and access limits.

By the end of week two, write a one-page project brief: working question, why it matters, boundaries, likely method, three central sources and the largest risk. Take that page to your supervisor. “Is this scope realistic?” produces better help than “What do you think of my dissertation?”

Weeks 3–4: build a literature map, not a reading pile

Search broadly, then read selectively. Keep a source matrix with columns for claim, method, evidence, limitation and where the source may serve your argument. Your goal is to see conversations and disagreements, not to collect a heroic number of PDFs.

Draft a provisional chapter or section plan now. It will change, which is useful: a plan exposes missing evidence while there is still time to find it. The method in our essay planning guide scales well when each “paragraph” becomes a dissertation section.

Weeks 5–7: research with a stopping rule

Whether you are collecting data, analysing texts or working through archives, define a stopping rule before the middle of this phase. It might be a target sample, a fixed corpus, saturation in themes or coverage of the key debate. Without a rule, research expands until it eats writing.

Write short method and findings memos as you go. Record what you did, why you changed course and what patterns are appearing. These notes become raw material for chapters and protect you from having to reconstruct your own decisions in week nine.

Research is not a waiting room for writing

Start drafting the literature review and method while evidence collection continues. Writing reveals weak logic and missing information earlier than another day of reading will.

Weeks 8–9: produce a complete ugly draft

A complete draft is more valuable than two polished chapters and a mysterious blank where the conclusion should be. Draft sections in the order that makes thinking easiest, not necessarily the final reading order. Methods and findings often come before the introduction.

Break each chapter into actions small enough for one session: “write the 300-word contrast between A and B” rather than “draft chapter two”. Our guide to breaking a large assignment into doable tasks gives the full method. End each session with a note naming the next sentence or decision, so tomorrow has an entrance.

Week 10: revise the structure before the sentences

Read only for argument. Does each chapter answer part of the research question? Does every section earn its space? Are findings and claims connected? Move, cut and add at this level before polishing prose. There is no benefit in perfecting a paragraph that structural revision will delete.

Send your supervisor the material they can still influence within your department's rules. Ask focused questions: Is the central claim clear? Is one section over-weighted? Which gap is most damaging? Then turn feedback into a list of decisions and tasks, not a cloud labelled “fix dissertation”.

Weeks 11–12: edit in separate passes

Use one pass for clarity, one for references and evidence, one for tables and formatting, then a final proof on a different screen or printed page. Check the title page, contents, page numbers, captions, appendices, file name and required declaration against the official checklist.

Submit to your private deadline and save the receipt plus a final backup. Do not use the spare day for optional rewriting unless something is genuinely wrong. Buffer only works when you resist spending it in advance.

How to fit the dissertation around other modules

Protect three or four recurring dissertation blocks each week, then give every block one output. Keep one shorter admin block for references, supervisor emails and organising files. A weekly study schedule with buffer prevents the dissertation from taking every available hour while smaller deadlines quietly gather outside.

Track milestones beside the rest of your degree in one student planner. The dissertation is important, but it is still a sequence of tasks inside a semester — not weather, fate or a personality test.

If you are two weeks behind

Protect the question, required method, full-draft date and final revision. Reduce the corpus or optional analysis only with appropriate supervisor guidance. Stop opening new research branches, convert existing notes into prose and make every remaining week end with a visible deliverable.

Most importantly, speak to your supervisor early. A smaller coherent project can be repaired. A secret impossible project usually waits until the deadline to announce its personality.

NowOne for iPhone keeps dissertation milestones, focused work sessions, files and the final deadline beside the rest of your modules.
