Spaced repetition: a study schedule that actually sticks
You understood the lecture on Monday. By Friday, its key terms have left without forwarding addresses. So you reread everything, feel a warm glow of recognition, and discover in the exam that recognition is not the same as an answer.
Spaced repetition tackles that problem by returning to material over expanding gaps. Difficult items come back sooner; secure items wait longer. It is less dramatic than cramming and, used well, much easier to trust.
What spaced repetition actually does
Spacing separates encounters with the same idea instead of stacking them into one session. The gap creates some forgetting, which makes the next successful retrieval effortful enough to be informative. Research broadly supports spaced practice over massed practice, but there is no universal perfect interval for every person, subject and exam.
The method therefore needs two parts: a schedule and a test. The schedule decides when an item returns. The test — usually active recall — tells you whether the gap was suitable. Looking at the answer for the fourth time is spaced exposure, but it does not give the same evidence as producing the answer yourself.
Do not space everything
Use spaced repetition for knowledge that must remain available: terminology, formulas, processes, cases, anatomy, vocabulary and important distinctions. It can also hold prompts for larger ideas, such as “compare these two theories”. It is less suitable as the only method for skills that require performance. A card can ask for a statistical test's assumptions; it cannot replace choosing and running that test on a messy dataset. Remember the ingredients, then practise cooking.
Build the first review schedule
Start simple. After learning an item properly, review it the next day, then after roughly three days, a week, two weeks and a month. Treat these as starting points, not commandments carved into a lecture theatre.

Let the answer quality change the schedule. If you have missed the same prompt three times, repeating it tomorrow may not solve the underlying problem. Return to the source, understand it again, then rewrite the prompt.
Make every review an honest retrieval
Hide the answer completely. Say it, write it or sketch it before checking. Give yourself a few seconds to search rather than revealing the back at the first awkward silence. That search is the useful part.
Grade honestly. “I would definitely have known that” belongs in the same category as “I did not know that”. If the answer contains four elements and you recalled two, mark it partial and bring it back sooner.
Never rate a card from familiarity. Produce the answer, compare it with the target, then choose the next interval. The order prevents confidence from doing the marking.
Keep prompts small enough to diagnose
A prompt asking “Explain the entire cardiovascular system” can fail in twelve different ways and tells you very little about which one occurred. Split it into linked questions that each test one relationship, step or decision.

Control the review queue before it controls you
The classic failure is adding 100 new cards after a productive lecture and meeting all 100 again tomorrow. New material creates future reviews. Set a daily new-item limit you can still afford during a busy week — perhaps 10 or 20, depending on the material.
Do due reviews before adding new items. If the queue grows beyond the time available, pause new cards and protect the most exam-relevant topics. A smaller system you use is better than a comprehensive system you avoid opening.
Recover from missed days without punishment
A missed day does not erase the method. Triage the overdue queue: high-priority difficult items first, mature easy items later. Work in short batches and stop at a planned time. Trying to clear 400 reviews in one resentful sitting tends to produce fast taps rather than useful recall.
If missed days are common, shrink the daily load or attach reviews to a stable cue, such as the first 20 minutes after lunch. The schedule should fit your semester, including the untidy parts.
Turn the intervals towards the exam

Spaced repetition is a memory schedule, not an entire education. Its job is to keep the right knowledge available so you can reason, solve and write with it when the assessment asks.
Track usefulness, not a perfect streak
Once a week, look at what the queue is telling you. Repeated misses may reveal a badly written prompt, a concept you never understood or two ideas that keep interfering with each other. Repair those items at the source. Consistently easy material may need a longer gap or no card at all.
The useful measure is whether important knowledge becomes easier to retrieve and use over time. A 60-day streak can feel satisfying, but it says little if every answer was revealed too early. Missing Tuesday matters less than returning on Wednesday with honest ratings and a manageable plan.
