How to study from lecture slides (without rereading them)
Lecture slides create a very specific illusion: after the fourth read, every bullet looks familiar, so the material must be entering long-term storage. Then somebody hides the slide and asks a question. The room becomes spiritually quiet.
If you want to know how to study from lecture slides, change the job. Do not practise looking at the answer. Practise producing it. The deck becomes a map and a source of questions; the real studying happens while the slides are closed.
First, map the deck in ten minutes
Skim the entire lecture once. Read section titles, learning objectives, summary slides and any repeated diagrams. Do not stop to memorise. Write a one-page map of the lecture: three to six major ideas in the order they connect.
This map stops slide 42 from becoming an isolated fact floating in space. It also shows what the lecturer considers important. If an idea appears in the objectives, receives ten slides and returns in the summary, it probably deserves more than a yellow highlight.
Turn slide headings into questions
For each important slide, hide the body and rewrite the heading as a question. “Causes of inflation” becomes “What causes inflation, and how does each cause change prices?” “Stages of mitosis” becomes “Can I name, order and recognise each stage?”
The wording should match what the assessment asks you to do. Definitions need “what” questions. Processes need “how” and “why”. Essays need comparison and evaluation. Calculations need a problem with the numbers changed.

Close the slides before answering
Now retrieve. Say the answer aloud, write it on a blank page or sketch the diagram without looking. Stay with the silence for a few seconds before reopening the deck. That uncomfortable search is part of the method, not evidence that the method has failed.
Check the slide, correct the answer in another colour and mark the question green, amber or red. Green can wait. Amber returns in a few days. Red needs a smaller question or a short return to the textbook. This is the same loop explained in our guide to the active recall study method.
If the answer remains visible while you “test” yourself, you are measuring familiarity. Cover the bullet points, labels and worked solution before deciding that you know them.
A worked example: one crowded economics slide
Imagine a slide titled “Demand-pull inflation” with four bullets, a graph and a real-world example. Do not make six copies of the slide in your notes. Create three prompts:
- Explain demand-pull inflation as a chain of cause and effect.
- Draw the graph from memory and explain the movement.
- Give one example, then state a limitation of the model.
Answer all three with the slide closed. When checking, add only what was missing. The result is shorter than the original slide but cognitively more demanding — exactly the direction useful revision should travel. Use flashcards selectively
Flashcards suit compact prompts: a term, formula, labelled structure, sequence or distinction. They are poor homes for a full lecture pasted in eight-point text. One card should ask for one answer you can judge.

Repair incomplete slides without rewriting the lecture
Slides are often prompts for the lecturer, not standalone teaching material. If a bullet makes no sense, consult your lecture notes, the assigned reading or the recording if available. Add one clarifying sentence beside the question, not a new transcript of the entire class.
Separate “not remembered” from “never understood”. Retrieval practice repairs the first. The second needs explanation, a worked example or help from the lecturer. Repeating a mysterious slide is still repeating a mystery.
Space three short reviews
Review the questions briefly within a day or two of the lecture, again later that week, then during the next relevant revision block. Hard questions return sooner; easy ones can wait. At the start of term, use the syllabus week setup to reserve a recurring review slot before the calendar fills itself.

A 30-minute lecture-slide routine
- 5 minutes: skim the deck and write its main sections.
- 8 minutes: turn important headings, diagrams and examples into questions.
- 12 minutes: close the deck and answer from memory.
- 3 minutes: check answers and mark green, amber or red.
- 2 minutes: schedule the red questions and create only the flashcards worth repeating.
As exams approach, replace small prompts with exam-shaped work: solve problems, draw complete diagrams, write paragraph plans and explain comparisons under time. The slides tell you what the course contained. Your practice should resemble what the exam asks you to produce.
